Petermann Ranges - Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (Ayers Rock), Katamala Cone, Butler Dome, Stevensons Peak, Mt Currie

Over 550 million years ago, the impact of a land mass with the continent of Australia hit with such force, that it thrust the Petermann Mountains up thousands of meters along a weak point of thinner crust beneath an old inland sea, somewhere near the border of South Australia and the Northern Territory. This event became known as the 'Petermann Event' or the Petermann Ranges Orogeny. After the event, the Petermann Mountains where a chain of snow-capped peaks extending for over 2000km. The rapid uplift of vast amounts of rock formed a range, similar in dimension to the Himalaya's, and resulted in large amounts of eroded material being deposited in vast alluvial fans, and on the northern flank, these sediments were eventually buried and consolidated. The later erosion of softer material above and around the consolidated rock, left what is now Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) exposed.

Tour details: Take off from Ayers Rock Airport and visiting Uluru and Kata Tjuta on route to explore the spectacular and mysterious remains of the ancient Petermann Ranges. Fly amongst these formations including the Katamala Cone, Butler Dome and Stevenson’s Peak, with an unobstructed breathtaking view millions of years into the past. On your return journey, your flight path will take you past Mt Currie, another sedimentary rock formation North-West of Kata Tjuta (The Olgas).
